Golden glory in Golden Mile

From the Cotswold Journal, first published Thursday 17th Jul 2008.

DURING last weekend's River Boat Festival, Evesham Rowing Club played host to the annual Golden Mile - an event which attracts competitors from across the globe.

Raced on Concept Two indoor machines, adult competitors race over 1609m - one mile - while juniors race for a set time trying to row the furthest.

This year's successes included a gold medal for Jordan Bunyan in Men's J18 Lightweight and a silver for Steve Redgewell in a very competitive men's Open Heavyweight category.

Jorden Parsons took silver in the WJ16 event while Abi Penrose won the women's J18 Heavyweights.

Evesham dominated the Year Nine girls event claiming gold, silver and bronze courtesy of Zena Tredell, Tash Bradley and laura Attwood. Sadie Bryan also won bronze as did Ross MacIlldowie and Joe Taylor.

Year Six competitors Georgina Walklett and Olivia Attwood came away with silver and bronze respectively while Under-15 Lewis Giles had a phenomenal row to win the gold medal with ease.

Other members enjoyed a successful time at the Llan-daff Regatta where the first win came from Veteran D double scullers David Pollard and Tony Rowlands.

Double scullers Dan Walker and Tom Leighton also reigned victorious as did Senior IV single scullers Terry MacDonald and Stacey Allen.

Abi Penrose had a battle on her hands in the straight final of Women's J18 singles against clubmate Allen who was pipped for a second gold.
